If you have back taxes that are unpaid, one of the remedies available to the IRS to collect these taxes is to file a tax lien on your property. The lien will be recorded in the county in which you live and is a public record that you owe back taxes. The lien attaches to your personal property, most likely your home, which virtually makes it impossible to refinance your home, if you wanted to. It also affects your credit score, which can make it more difficult for you to receive credit anywhere else. The lien remains attached to the property until the tax is paid in full or the IRS agrees to release it.
