FILING BACK TAXES:

If you haven't filed your taxes in a few years, you may be wondering what the IRS can do? Can they take me to jail, for example, or take away my home?

First of all, the IRS will not put you in jail, nor take your home., if you are willing to work with them and take care of your back tax problems. However, if you avoid them, refuse to answer their notices, they can take you to trial and you could get jail time. Even then, however, it is very unlikely, but they can and will make your life miserable. Here is what they normally will do:

*Assess penalties and interest, which can be severe
*File a Substitute tax return for you. This return is based upon information filed to them by other parties, such as W-2 from employers and 1099's from companies, banks, etc. The return will not include any other exemption allowed you, nor any expenses or deductions you are entitled to. It generally overstates your income liability, often by a huge amount.
*Once tax is assessed, the IRS will start the collection process, which can mean placing a levy on your wages or other income or a lien on your property. Penalties and interest will be applied.

Don't let that happen to you. I can help you file back tax returns so that you take advantage of all your exemptions, deductions and tax credits, even if the IRS has already filed a substitute tax return for you. I can make sure you are subject to the least amount of tax possible and assist you in making payment arrangements with the IRS. If you are unable to pay, I can assist you in negotiating a settlement with the IRS.

So, please contact me if you are behind filing your tax returns. It may well be the best personal tax decision you ever made.
